Robert Gutierrez: Nursed in Darkness
September 9 - October 16, 2005
Ratio 3, 903 Guerrero, San Francisco, CA 94110

Opening reception: September 9, 2005, 6-8pm.

Ratio 3 is pleased to present Nursed in Darkness, new work by Robert Gutierrez, on view from September 9 to October 16, 2005.

Robert Gutierrez will debut new works on panel and paper that integrate Filipino folklore and animism. Gutierrez paints colorful works on panel that teem with organic shapes, blooming fauna, and an infinite energy. In his newest works, Gutierrez extends his vision of fantastical destruction and sexual tension into new terrain. Totemic ruins and body fragments litter these finely detailed dreamlike landscapes. In his works on paper, Gutierrez employs a limited color palette to create a feeling of ephemeral energy and delicate spaciousness.

Robert Gutierrez was born in 1972 in Manila, Philippines. He graduated from Otis Parsons in 1994 with a B.F.A. in painting. He has exhibited nationally, and his work has been included in exhibitions at New Langton Arts, San Francisco (2002), Deitch Projects, New York (2003), White Columns, New York (2004), Cohan and Leslie, New York (2005), and "Bay Area Now 4" (2005), currently on view at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. He has had solo exhibitions at Adobe Bookstore and Gallery, San Francisco (2003), Queen's Nail Annex, San Francisco (2004), and Sister, Los Angeles (2004). He will have forthcoming solo exhibitions at AMT Gallery, Como, Italy (2005) and SixtySeven Gallery, New York (2006). His work is also included in the upcoming "With us against reality, or Against us!," Willy Wonka Inc./Gallerie S.E., Oslo, Norway (2005) and "Alimachuan," Honolulu Contemporary Museum, Hawaii (2006). In 2004 his work was acquired by the New Museum of Contemporary Art as part of the Altoids Curiously Strong Collection. Gutierrez currently lives and works in San Francisco. This is his first solo exhibition with Ratio 3.
