Ratio 3 is pleased to present Everything Butt, an exhibition of new work by Petra Mrzyk and Jean-François Moriceau. Taking its title from a simple, irreverent play on words, Everything Butt is an immersive exhibition of Mrzyk & Moriceau's unique aesthetic of wit and absurdity.
For their second solo exhibition in San Francisco, Mrzyk & Moriceau have created an expansive installation combining drawings at various scales. Simple, well-articulated drawings on paper are pinned throughout the exhibition space, interspersed within massive paintings that dominate the gallery's walls.
Known primarily for their precise black-and-white ink drawings, their work alternates between the perverse and the playful. By borrowing and distorting conventions from commercial illustration and imagery from popular culture, Mrzyk & Moriceau's practice feels both oddly familiar and singularly bizarre. Throughout their work, playfully illustrated human body parts take on full human personalities; inanimate objects come to life; and everything is underscored with a whimsical, yet dark humor.
Petra Mrzyk (b. 1973) and Jean-François Moriceau (b. 1974) live and work in Montjean-sur-Loire, France. They have been working collaboratively since 1998. They have had solo exhibitions at Air de Paris, Paris (2012, 2008, 2004), Caixa Forum, Barcelona (2008), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2006), Mamco, Geneva (2004), and Schnitt Ausstellungsraum, Cologne (2001). Their work has exhibited internationally in many group exhibitions, and they have produced music videos for Air, Sebastian Tellier, and others. Everything Butt is their second solo exhibition at Ratio 3.
