Ben Peterson: You Build It, We Burn It
March 3 - April 9, 2006
Ratio 3, 903 Guerrero, San Francisco, CA 94110
Opening reception: March 3, 2006, 6-8pm.
Ratio 3 is pleased to present You Build It, We Burn It, new work by Ben Peterson, on view from March 3 to April 9, 2006. Ben Peterson uses eco-terrorism as a springboard for a series of drawings and a sculpture dealing with the fission between ideology, action and result. Devoid of people, these partly fictional sites highlight the schizophrenic way hyper-capitalism encourages us to identify with the objects and materials that surround us. Set within a charged climate, Peterson's retail environments offer a setting where consumer choices become a surrogate for activism itself. A large globe, reminiscent of the Unisphere from the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, is futilely reclaimed in a naïve attempt to save the Earth from us.
Ben Peterson was born in 1977 in Hawthorne, Nevada. He graduated from the California College of the Arts in 2004 with a B.F.A. in Painting. His work has been included in exhibitions at Mary Goldman Gallery, Los Angeles (2005), Cohan and Leslie, New York (2005), and White Columns, New York (2003). In 2006 he will exhibit at the Deste Foundation Centre for Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece, and will have solo exhibitions at Mary Goldman Gallery, Los Angeles, and Allston Skirt Gallery, Boston. Peterson currently lives and works in Alameda. This is his second solo exhibition with Ratio 3.
